You need to do a post-vasectomy semen test to know there are no residual sperm in your semen. This is done through a separate lab which offers convenient mail-in testing. Post-Procedure Instructions

• Go straight home and rest for the day
• Apply an ice pack to the area (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 4–6 hours
• Wear snug underwear or an athletic supporter for the first week
• Avoid heavy lifting, running, or sexual activity for 5-7 days
• Mild soreness and swelling are normal—use acetaminophen 1000mg and ibuprofen 600mg every 6-8 hours as needed (most just take a few doses over the first 1-2 days after the procedure)
• Shower after 24 hours; avoid baths, pools, or hot tubs for 7 days to allow the opening in the scrotum to fully heal
• Follow-up semen analysis at 12 weeks to confirm success before stopping other birth control

Pre-Procedure Instructions

• Shower the morning of your procedure
• Shave or trim hair on the scrotum
• Eat a light meal or snack within a few hours of your proceedure
• Wear supportive underwear (compression shorts, tight boxer briefs, or a jock strap)
• Bring someone with you if desired (it can be nice to have a support person present, or help on the drive home if you need to get gas, change a tire, etc)
• Avoid aspirin or other blood-thinning medications for 5 days prior unless approved by your doctor

• The area is cleaned
• The front of the scrotum in numbed with several sprays of numbing medicine with a device called a MadaJet
• A small opening (about 1/4 inch) is made in the front of the scrotum
• The vas deferens from each side is brought to the opening and the center of one end of the tube is heated with a hot-tipped cautery pen to encourage scarring, the tube is cut, and one end is tucked back into the surrounding connective tissue (called fascia) with a tiny 3mm titanium surgical clip (dissolvable suture also available)
• The vas deferens is returned to its normal position
• This is repeated with the second side
• No external stitches are required- the opening in the scrotal skin will start to heal and typically close within a day or so.
